Day 143
Lake of the Clouds Hut
1823.3 miles

A couple harder days to get here.  Yesterday I went down Garfield, up South Twin, then over Guyot and Zeacliff to the Zealand Falls hut, and finally along a fairly level grade to the Ethan Pond Campsite.  Today I had about 3 miles downhill into Crawford Notch, and the rest of the day was a climb up into the Presidentials.  Lake of the Clouds Hut is nestled below the summit of Mt. Washington.  This hut is the first place I've tried to do the work-for-stay option in the Whites, and it's been fine.  The work has been stuff like setting up tables in the dining area - where the paying guests eat.  I get a bunk, dinner, and a breakfast out of the deal, with the only drawback being we have to eat later.  So I'm not going to get an early start out of here tomorrow morning, but I'm not planning a long day anyways.  Just enough to get me back down off the exposed ridgeline and to Osgood Tentsite, well below treeline.  Today it was overcast, but I had pretty good views for most of the day until I got up high near the cloud ceiling.  Chances are the summit of Washington will be fogged in tomorrow, but I've seen it before on a nice day so I'll settle for any weather that doesn't include hail, sleet, or hurricane-force winds.
