Day 95
William Penn shelter
1165.7 miles
I think it's been about 5 days since I wrote anything. And, in another break from routine, it's morning right now. I've yet to get up because I'm only going about 4 miles to the 501 shelter (named after a road - not the jeans) and then I'm going to need to hitch to the nearby town of Pine Grove to do laundry and buy some food. Since the 501 is reputed to have a solar shower, I'm sort of trying to do a full "town day" without having to pay for a motel. The problem with this plan is that the view out the front of this shelter this morning is into a sea of fog. So, unless this burns off soon, the solar shower won't be warm by the time I get there and the cars wont be able to see me when I try to hitch. I haven't seen a forecast since I left Mt. Holly Springs, so I don't know what the weather is supposed to be doing. It had been mostly clear, warm, but not too humid (thank goodness) the last couple of days. But last evening the wind was kicking up and that usually presages some kind of change.
I've done a few "longish" days on the way here, but last night in planning the next section, I tried to keep to 15/16 mile days. I hope you got my phone message. I left it while I was walking through the town of Duncannon, and I was feeling the effects of the first beer that I'd had in a long while. Just to be sociable, I had stopped by the "venerable" (read: run-down) Doyle Hotel and tipped one with Hawk, Relic, Eric, Little Feet, Buzz, and Sneaks, who were staying there. I had been hearing about the Doyle, and wisely, I think, decided to move on. So they are just a bit behind me now. A few other people I've met, Granite, Grey Squirrel, Smiley, and Wahoo are pulling ahead of me. I think it's time for me to get up.
(Later that day at the 501) Things have worked out pretty well so far. I got
here about 11:00, shaved, rinsed off (the shower wasn't exactly hot) and
then hitched into Pine Grove. Did my laundry and bought some food and
then got offered a ride back to the Trail before I even stuck my thumb
out (the backpack is a dead giveaway). While I was outside the shelter
talking with some of the new arrivals, a "Trail Angel" showed up and offered
us fresh veggies, dip, crackers, apples, and jugs of ice tea and lemonade.
Then a thunderstorm started so we all moved inside. Now we're listening
to the rain on the roof and talking about ordering some pizza.
