Day 85
Rocky Run shelter, MD
1017.9 miles
Stayed at the hostel near Harper's Ferry last night after a full day of bus and train travel up from Atlanta. It was an interesting journey, but it just brought home the fact that people who have the money find other ways to travel.
My fears about a drought in the mid-Atlantic states appear to be unfounded. It
rained last night, was foggy all day, and came down in buckets this afternoon
after the rumbles of thunder convinced me to stop at this shelter rather than
press on. There are four of us here and the shelter would fit five. One of them
is an older guy who remembered meeting me South of Pearisburg, VA. I
recognized another fellow at the hostel, though he had just decided to leave
the Trail because of chronic knee problems. Looking through the register I
see a few familiar names. I guess we'll all be hiking in the rain for the next few
days.
