Day 74
Siler Bald Shelter, NC
892.1 miles

Well, I must be getting that high-miler craziness because I did 23.6 today!  Actually, I think I'm just getting impatient to reach Springer and complete the first half of this epic adventure.  I did 20 miles the day before yesterday from the Fontana "Hilton" shelter to a campsite atop Cheoah Bald.  Then yesterday was hot and going only 8 miles downhill to the Nantahala Outdoor Center (N.O.C - a big rafting center) wore me out and I decided to stay there rather than push on.  Two pints of Ben & Jerry's seems to have restored my strength and I felt pretty good this morning.  I wanted an early start so I could climb out of Nantahala Gorge in the cool of the morning.  It stayed overcast most of the day and that helped keep me from overheating, so I kept going.  I did get decent views from Wesser, Wayah, and Siler Balds.

Next morning:  It started raining around dawn, and now, an hour later, it's been coming down hard for a while now.  I'm so glad I made it to this shelter last night rather than camping out.  Otherwise, my food would be inaccessible hanging in a tree, and even getting out of the tent to take a leak would be impossible without getting soaked by rain.  Since I'm obviously not going to get an early start today, I may go back to my original plan to spend the night in the town of Franklin.  Last evening when the skies were as clear as they'd been all day, I thought maybe I'd just resupply food there and then hitch back to the Trail.  The road is only about a 4 mile walk downhill from here.  The noise from the rain on the metal roof is so loud it almost drowns out the rumbles of thunder.  I may hike out of here in the rain, but I'll wait until the electrical stuff is over before I leave.
