Day 44
Hurricane Campground
500.8 miles

Hey, look at that!  I just hit the 500 mile mark today!  That's approximately the halfway point between Harpers Ferry and Springer Mountain.  And in another 40 miles or so when I reach Damascus, I'll have completed ¼ of the AT and finally be on my way out of Virginia!

When I have asked Northbounders about what they've liked best so far, one of the most frequent answers is the place I am headed for tomorrow, the Grayson Highlands.  Apparently the high plateau is open grassland, kept clear by feral ponies.  People have said that the surrounding peaks look more rugged than is typical for Virginia.  The range includes Whitetop Mountain and Mt. Rogers, at 5,729 feet, the highest peak in the state.
