Check

Learn how you can provide a forever home, foster
home or support.

A
lot of wonderful things have happened since we published "For Pete's
Sake!"…Numerous newspaper articles, radio and TV appearances, hospital
and school visits, and many book signings to name a few. All the
while, I thought Pete's condition was one of a kind. Sure I knew
there were other dogs out there who were blind or deaf, but not
both and certainly not from birth. That was until one day, I did
an internet search on blind deaf dogs.

I could not believe what I found. Not only did I find other owners
with blind deaf dogs, I discovered that many of the dogs happened
to be Australian Shepherds! Coincidence? Sadly, not.
In simple terms, Pete is the result of what's called Merle-to-Merle
breeding. Pups born with varying degrees of blindness and/or deafness
due to this practice are commonly known as Lethal Whites. The controversial
but accurate name is given to them because of their tragic fate.
It is a very complicated subject. One in which I am not qualified
to try and explain.

Fortunately, there are wonderful individuals dedicated to educating
people about this practice and most importantly, saving the Lethals.
One such group is Aussielads Rescue located in Mesa, AZ. I have
become a weekly visitor on their web site to try and stay updated
on what kind of progress they are making. While they are placing
many special needs Aussies all over the US, there is always another
one, two, or three to take their place.

Pictured above and around are some of the cuties. Click on their
picture to learn a little more about them and others available for
adoption. If you would like to learn more about Lethal Whites, www.aussielads.com
is a great place to start. There is a lot of information, so take
your time searching, enjoy the success stories, and watch out… you
might find "the one" who will add love in your heart and joy to
your life.
Thank you, Thank you, Aussielads Rescue!!!
