General help on older Intertel phone system wiring

If you have the wrong handset type your phone will transmit low or not at all!!

Intertel saved a nickel and changed handset types on the ESP, IMX, GLX, and GMX phones half way through production and kept the old part numbers on the new phones.

USE WITH ELECTRET HANDSET ONLY!
If the sticker on the phone says this you have to use an E1 handset!

Some ESP, GLX and GMX DVK phones say this on the bottom tag. That means they need an electret (or E1) handset. An incorrect handset will either not transmit or transmit very quiet. The easiest way to tell if you have an E1 handset is by looking just under the earpiece. You will see a rectangular notch, if E1 is printed inside the notch you have an electret handset, if not, it’s a dynamic handset.

Please note that the handset you use could be an after market handset without the E1 printed in the notch, or your phone could have been modified at some point in its life. If your phone is transmitting low or not at all try a new cord and both kinds of handsets.

ESP Problems: The ESP phones have a lot of intermittent problems. Bad connections in the hook switch, volume controls and internal plugs cause many bad things to happen. Typically your phone may cut out, disconnect calls, not ring, etc.. These are all easily repairable and any reputable repair shop should fix them.

Phone Self Test: Plug phone in while holding down "#" and "*" keys. Follow instructions on display if available. Each time hook switch is depressed test advances one step. During the button test you must proceed in the proper order and hit every button. (confirmation tone will sound) If testing a 12 btn ESP phone you won't be able to pass the button test unless you depress the the hook switch for every missing button (compared to a 24 button phone)

Set Time and Date: From station 100 (handset down) dial SPCL 021, enter time and date using the number pad.

Clear Warning and error messages: SPCL 019

Toggle night ring: SPCL 010 (from station 100)

To program phone information, Name etc.: From station 100 dial SPCL 022, then dial the extension number to be programmed. Press the SPCL key and follow directions. To Enter a name use the keypad (for A dial 2, for B dial 2-2, for C dial 2-2-2, for D dial 3, etc.) Press the SPCL key again when you are done. I don't recommend changing the other information unless you know what you are doing.

To see what your soft-keys are programmed for: with the handset down dial SPCL 326, then press any soft-key, the display will show you what the key is programmed for.

Program Hold key for system hold instead of individual hold: With handset down press SPCL 327, then pick the soft-key to program (HOLD) and then dial the new code. (335 for system hold, 336 for individual hold)

To get your phones to answer a ringing line automatically when you pick up the handset: With the handset down press the SPCL button and dial 360 (E360). To turn auto-answer off press SPCL and dial 361.

To change the way your phone ring sounds: SPCL 328 then pick different ring patterns with the number pad (1-0,#,*) The last one you pick will be the ring for that phone. Lift handset when done to end programming.

REPAIR TIP: Phone wont ring sometimes: The ring volume knob builds up gunk causing the phone not to ring sometimes. Test this by holding any key down (With the handset down) and adjusting the ring volume. If there is a lot of break up or static then you'll have trouble with the ringing. You may be able to temporarily fix this by twisting the volume up and down many times. (Until the scratching goes away)
