Dear Parent(s), In my classroom and in our school, I take behavior very seriously.
In order for all students to receive the best education possible, it is
important that we all do our part to not interfere with the process. I
have very high expectations for each individual. In order to maintain a
positive level of behavior, I have a traffic light system that I have used
for the past 9 years.
Occasionally students will make poor choices within the classroom and they will be given a verbal warning about what is expected. If the student fails to listen to the verbal warning, their name will be written on the board under the word, WARNING. If the inappropriate behavior continues to interrupt the class, their name will be placed near the YELLOW light. This warning will result in the loss of 5 minutes of their recess and I will record the behavior to a weekly chart. At this point the student should stop the inappropriate behavior. When a student continues to interfere with the learning process, their name will move to the RED. The red light indicates that they were unable to make the appropriate choices and they will lose their entire recess, be excluded from Mystery Friday, and you will be notified. I encourage you to discuss the RED light with your child and have your child discuss how to make better choices. Refer your child back to Kelso’s Choices, our school adopted conflict resolution program. Giving children double consequences may be ineffective. I promote home incentives for good behavior. If you receive a weekly behavior chart displaying YELLOW or RED lights, please sign it and return it to school the following day. PRIZE BOX: Students earn a stamp on their 20 square grid when they have a perfect (GREEN) behavior day. When their chart is full, they may choose an item from the "Prize Box". KELSO KIDS: Students that exhibit superb conflict resolution skills will be nominated for the "Kelso's Choice Award". MYSTERY FRIDAYS: Students will be surprised with special projects, activities, videos, or treats. In order for your child to participate in the second grade Mystery Friday every other week, the following things must happen:
If the standards are set high, the student will rise to it! I encourage your feedback. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please write or e-mail me at lflynn@biddschools.org . I look forward to a great year together. Sincerely, Mrs. Flynn
