Annie Oakley

Hi, my name is Annie Oakley. My family was poor and my father died when I was 9. I went to work for the poor, instead of getting money I got clothes and food. When I was eleven I went to go work for a farmer who promised me 50 cents a week but never paid me for my hard work. I ran home to my mother and told her about the lies he had made. One day I picked up a riffle and fired it. I found something I could do better then anybody else in the world. I was the best shoot in Greenville. I could shoot the head of a running quail when I was twelve years old. In 1875 when I was fifteen I went to live with my married sister in Cincinnati. There met frank butler at a contest I entered. He was famous for trick shooting. Soon after the contest I married frank butler. Frank and I started our own show it was called the butler and Oakley show. It wasn’t easy to keep a show going. So we joined the sells brothers’ circus. We wanted to leave the circus and then we heard about the Wild West show. The person who owned the show was buffalo bill. Frank and I joined the wild west show in 1885. Sitting bull who defeated General Custer at the battle of the bighorn in 1876 joined the show. He liked me so much he adopted me. He told me about his family back home . he had eleven children of his own. He also had taken in other children who had no place to go. I knew what it was like to be lonely as a child I spent a lot of years away from my family. I invited 50 0rphans to my show. They liked it so much that the Wild West gave free tickets to every orphanage in New York for a special Annie Oakley
