Article XVIII

    Committee of Accounts, Their Duty.
    There shall be a Standing Committee of Accounts, to consist of three members, whose duty it shall be to examine the Secretary’s accounts every three months and the Treasurer’s accounts every six months and report thereon at the annual meeting, or oftener if required by a vote of the Society.

Article XIX

    Donations Not to Exceed the Interest on the Fund.
    The annual expenses, grants and donations from the Society to distressed and indigent members, their widows and families may extend to, but on no pretense exceed the annual interest of the Society’s funds.

Article XX

    Method of Obtaining Membership—A Member Wishing to Leave the Society, How to Proceed.
    From and after the annual meeting in December, 1824, any person desirous of being admitted a member of the Portland Marine Society, must be proposed by one of the members thereof, who will vouch for his being of a good moral character, and the application and proposal shall be referred to the Committee of Membership who shall report the same. If the Committee of Membership is favorable, any candidate having been entered on the Society’s records, for not less than one month previous, may be balloted for. Such candidate can only be balloted for by "Yes" and "No" ballot at the regular meeting of the Society and two "No" votes or "black balls" shall reject him. All members admitted shall be by ballot. Any member who may wish to leave the Society shall make the request in writing, addressed to the President, on which a vote shall be passed at the next meeting of the Society; and so long as a member shall neglect to ask a dismission, he shall be liable to pay his assessments in full, until regularly dismissed by vote of the Society.

Article XXI

    For Altering the ByLaws, How to Proceed.
    The foregoing ByLaws may be amended or repealed at any annual meeting only, whenever three members submit such proposed change in writing to the Society, and three-quarters of the members present shall so determine by ballot; but no such alteration shall be made unless the subject shall have been proposed at a previous meeting, and such change as proposed shall be specified in the notification of the meeting at which it is to be considered.
