Article VI
Designs of the
Institution; Implementation of the Designs and Purposes.
As the original design and purpose of this
Society is the promotion and knowledge of navigation at sea and seamanship, the Finance
Committee, after making provisions for needed relief as provided for in the second and
third purposes of this Society, shall report to the membership the amount of funds which
they believe could wisely be devoted to the first purpose of the Society. Promotion of
navigation at sea and seamanship is construed to include, without limitation, the
subsidization, in part or in full, of instruction in Nautical Sciences, as well as the
provision of financial assistance, enabling attendance of deserving young persons at
educational institutions providing instruction in Nautical Sciences.
As the second and third designs and purposes of this Society are the relief of decayed and disabled seamen, and poor widows and orphans of deceased seamen, this Society shall use any income received by it to promote the welfare of officers and seamen who are distressed or indigent and need the help of this Society; also said funds may be used at the discretion of the Directors to aid and give relief to the needy widows and children of such officers and seamen of vessels. All applications for relief must be made in writing and addressed to the President of the Society, who shall immediately hand the same to the Committee on Relief, which shall make due inquiry and report thereon at the next meeting following receipt of such application.
