An
idea was proposed on an Appalachian Trail (AT) web forum in March
2003 suggesting that a group of hiker/photographers document the entire length
of the AT in one day. Such a photo essay could be published with the
profits benefiting the Appalachian Trail Conference. The date selected was
Sunday, May 30, 2004, on the Memorial Day weekend. The one day photo shoot
was chosen to provide a unique perspective on the trail, its community, flora,
and fauna from the near summer heat in Georgia to an early spring environment
in Maine.
An endeavor of this magnitude required the participation of at least 211 volunteer hiker/photographers. Ginger and I were among those volunteers and we photographed a section of the AT from Trident Col to the New Hampshire/Maine State Line. We maintain a section of the Appalachian Trail from Trident Col to Dream Lake. The section that we photographed included four high elevation ponds, typical Mahoosuc bogs, and high elevation vitas to the Presidential, Moriah-Carter, and Wild River mountain ranges. Posted below are ten low resolution images of the photo files forwarded for possible inclusion in the to be published photo essay book. These images are our attempt to capture the full impact of this middle Mahoosuc Mountains portion of the AT . The original photo files, consisting of 15 MB high resolution files, have been reduced to 60 KB jpeg file images at 72dpi for viewing on your computer monitor.
