FIRST MOUNTAIN FOREST

VIEWS FROM JOE'S LEDGES - THEN & NOW

Looking out over Androscoggin Valley, 1999

The AMC photograph on the left appeared in "Mountain Passages - An Appalachian Anthology", edited by Robert E. Manning and published by the AMC in 1982.  The photo is captioned "Looking out over Androscoggin Valley, 1914" and the subjects are not identified.  This photograph was taken from the overlook at Joe's Ledges on First Mountain, which was referred to locally as Joe's Mountain at the time. We initially thought this photograph might have been take from nearby Mount Crag, but analysis convinces us that it is in fact from Joe's Ledges. Anne Whitney, then owner of First Mountain and Joe's Ledges, would have been 93 years of age when the photo was taken.

The 1999 photo on the right, taken from Joe's Ledges, shows a narrower course now followed by the Androscoggin River. The construction of the Leadmine Bridge and Dam created the Reflection Pond visible above the hiker's head.

This fall photo portrays the view to the southeast from the same overlook. The Androscoggin River can be observed as it flows back into the state of Maine for its eventual journey to Merrymeeting Bay.
