MANAGEMENT PLAN - INTRODUCTION
Many forest land owners are not interested in harvesting timber from their property and for that reason believe that a forest management plan is not necessary or beneficial to them. Yet, a management plan can be beneficial for managing a forest for wildlife benefits and recreation, as well as to promote timber growth. Consulting foresters are available to help those who don't feel that they can prepare a plan adequately by themselves. While they charge fees for their services, those fees are usually balanced by tax benefits and improved productivity and increased value of the forest land.
The original forest management plan for First Mountain Forest was prepared by the owner without the use of a consulting forester, but with the free assistance of the UNH Cooperative Extension Service. The plan was accepted by the town selectman and resulted in the land being taxed at the lowest rate reserved for forest land managed under responsible stewardship.
After the 1998 ice storm caused severe damage to portions of First Mountain Forest, the owners decided to apply for Stewardship Incentive Program funds for ice storm damage. However, a qualifying stewardship plan by a certified forester was required to apply for such funds. We hired Charlie Baylies of New England Forestry Consultants, Inc. and the Ecosystem Based Management team for this certification, and his addendum has been added to our original plan. The addendum appears in bold type where excerpts are added to individual Parts of the original plan. Web links to Charlie, New England Forestry Consultants, Inc., and Team EBM have been posted to Part 8 of this plan, which includes the full text of the plan addendum.
