Maine Camp Hospital Association

Origin

    On the evening of Nov. 7, 1862, a few ladies and gentlemen met at the residence of Hon. Jedediah Jewett for the purpose of forming an organization, by means of which relief and comfort might more effectually and surely be administered to Maine soldiers, who are sick or wounded in camp hospitals or on the battle-field.

    Hon. S.E. Spring was appointed Chairman, and L.B. Smith, Clerk.

    A letter was read from Mrs. H. Eaton, who with Mrs. I. Fogg, was then ministering to our wounded who had been left in camps near Harper’s Ferry, after the battle at Antietam, showing both the practicability and necessity of systematic efforts in this direction It was resolved to form an association, to be named THE MAINE CAMP HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION. The following Board of Officers was chosen:

Mr. L.B. Smith, Secretary.
Miss Harriet Fox, Corresponding Secretary.
Mr. Geo. W. Woodman, Treasurer.

Mrs. Eaton and Mrs. Fogg were adopted as Nurses, whom the Association would endeavor to furnish with supplies for their benevolent labors among our sick and wounded soldiers in the field.
